Changes for Meals on wheels
After 57 years operating as a separate entity, Hobart Meals on Wheels will cease to be incorporated in their own right as of today with the group joining the State body as a committee to run the operation in the Hobart area.
Over the decades, many hundreds of volunteers have provided ongoing service to thousands of recipients. The Hobart group also played a significant role in the formation of other groups that now operate in Southern Tasmania.
Meals on Wheels Chief Executive Officer Sean Burk said, “Our recipients will see no change to the great service that they have always received, however the administration will join with the State to streamline back office functions.”
“This is part of the process to join all the groups operating around the State into one corporate body which will improve communication, procedures and compliance,” he said.
To mark the formal closure of Meals on Wheels Hobart Inc., The Lord Mayor of Hobart and Deputy President of Meals on Wheels Hobart, Alderman Damon Thomas will host a civic reception today at the Hobart Town Hall between 2.00 p.m. – 3.00 p.m.

Meals on Wheels celebrates 40 years in Penguin

1972 heralded the start of Meals On Wheels deliveries in the Penguin area. Forty years on, the committee unanimously decided any celebration should be centred around our recipients. A free meals was decided to be given on that day but we felt something more special was needed to mark the occasion, so after talking to them all and getting a positive response to our suggestion of an outing for afternoon tea, all agreed that would be appreciated. The Blue Wren Tearooms was decided on as a suitable venue, for the lovely scenery and easy access for any with mobility problems. A community bus was hired from the Central Coast Council together with some committee members cars to transport everyone as comfortably as possible, with other committee members on hand to greet and assist all if needed as they arrived. The friendly and capable staff at the Blue Wren tended to all, and provided a delicious spread which was enjoyed by everyone.
